The much anticipated day finally arrived on October 23rd 2019, when the students and staff of Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos, decided to join hands on the campus against cancer.
The event tagged “Cancer-free campus” and carried out with collaboration with the Department of Human Kinetics, Sports, and Health Education and other partners featured several interesting programs including multiple advocacy and awareness sessions on LASU Radio, campus-wide massive cancer awareness walk, cancer symposium, students quiz, and clinical breast examination session.
Over 400 students and staff defied the early morning rain to walk round the campus and visiting important centers and offices including the Vice Chancellor’s chamber with various displays of cancer awareness and educational messages.
While the massive walk was ongoing, members of WOCAPSS-Africa were on LASU radio educating the masses about cancer.
The event progressed to the symposium hall where over 800 students and staff were in active participation including a very interesting cancer quiz session and award presentation to students and staffs. Special mentions among the attendees include the student association president, the LASU Queen (Miss LASU 2019), and some University professors.
The event also featured an ongoing clinical breast examination for all participants with over 50% discount on breast scan and mammography for staff and students. This important service was supported by Foremost diagnostics and other partners.
The event came to a close with address from Dr Abiola and the President of the Student Association.
